New Mexico Diving
Abel Sanchez, a 2000 Summer Olympian, 3-time South American Silver medalist, 2-time United States Silver medalist, 3-time All-American and Academic All-American at the University of Michigan.
He placed 7th at the NCAA Championships, finishing as high as fourth. Sanchez was also a three-time All-Big Ten Conference honoree. He won two silver medals at the conference championships in his career and helped Michigan to four consecutive Big 10 titles and a NCAA National Championship in 1995.
After his collegiate career ended, Sanchez continued to dive, training with Olympic coach Kenny Armstrong, Jay Lerew and Olympian and world champion Janet Ely. Now after completing his 6th year at the University of New Mexico as the women’s head diving coach, here are a few things he’s accomplished at UNM.

Abel began his age group program in the winter of 2004. His philosophy in running an age group team is to foster an environment for learning, and create a safe place where the divers will feel comfortable and excited to return to learn new and more exciting dives. He also believes that a healthy age group will create a strong feeder program for the University team and a strong University team will help push the age group team to higher aspirations.
